All Ireland champions!!
History was made yesterday when St Flannans first year boys won the all Ireland “A” soccer final, overcoming Scoil Dara, Kilcock on a scoreline of 2-1 at a windy Athlone Town Stadium.
Cheered on admirably by our supporters who made the trip from Ennis, our lads weathered an initial storm from Scoil Dara, and found ourselves full value for our two goal lead at half time, our goals once again being scored by the gifted Ben Lyne.
However, this was no one man show as a battle hardened Flannans team (having remained unbeaten in all 15 games they played this year) had to repel numerous attacks in the second half. Scoil Dara managed to claw one back but despite some nervous moments our lads, helped by some great goalkeeping by Graham O Connor, held on for a most famous of victories.
For Flannans, the fairytale journey that has brought success in three different competitions will continue next May when we play the best of the north of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England in a three day tournament. Congratulations to all the lads who have done their school, families, clubs and themselves proud.
