Boys Basketball

The start of the year has been busy for members of our Under 16 and Under 19 teams.

For the Under 16s it has been all about getting used to working with eachother at this new age group and understanding the pressure that will be put on them in their future games for the school. This squad have not had the opportunity to prove themselves in a game yet this year but we are scheduled to play Gort next Tuesday the 21st of October.

Our Under 19 team however hit the ground running in the first few weeks of the school term. They were registered in both the Schools Cup and Schools League this year.

Their year began in September against Limerick Educate Together Secondary School in a tightly contested game in the first round of the Cup. With this competition being a straight knock out competition pressure was on for the boys to come out on top.

The opposing team were well setup with a strong defense and offence. After trailing behind all game the boys started the 4th quarter with a hinger to prove they could do well in this competition and won the game by 4 points in a overtime.

The lads then adressed what worked well and what did not work in the next training session and we put what we learned from that game to practice in the 2nd round of the cup on Friday the 10th of October against Castlerea Community School from Co. Roscommon.

From the start of the game we started on the front foot from the tip off easily won by Ashton Glynn. Despite being fouled while going to the basket after this tip off Michael Cleary finished off the good work started by Ashton and put 3 points on the board. (2 from play 1 from the free throw line).

The boys then settled into their ryhtm and despite a small mistake at the start of the 4th quarter which brought us from an 18 point lead down to a lead of 6 points. after a quick discussion in a time out the lads put the heads down and comfortably won the game.

This secured their spot in the next round of the cup to be played on the 6th of November. Before that however we have to play Gort the same day as the U16 team in the first round of the league.

Thank you to all players for their hard work and dedication shown on the court in training and games so far this year and to 5th Year Student Aine McManus for the great photography.
