Munster Junior B Championship RD1
St. Flannan’s College produced a superb second-half display to overcome a strong St Joseph’s Borrisoleigh side in round 1 of their Munster Junior B campaign, 0-14 to 2-6 victory.
Played in challenging, breezy conditions, St. Flannan’s found themselves facing an uphill task at the break, trailing by four points against a physically strong and skilful Borrisoleigh outfit. However, the girls showed outstanding determination, grit and resilience to turn the contest around and emerge deserving winners.
With the wind marginally in their favour after half-time, St Flannan’s gradually worked their way back into the game. Crucially, they picked off scores at vital stages and never allowed their opponents to build momentum. The link-up play between midfield and attack was a key feature of the second-half performance, helping the team maintain a steady stream of scores.
Goalkeeper Mia Riordan played a pivotal role throughout with a series of excellent puck-outs that consistently found their target and helped launch attacks from deep. In defence Chroía Casey and Orla Seery worked tirelessly, while the entire full-back line produced a heroic display in the closing stages.
As Borrisoleigh pushed desperately for goals in the dying minutes, the St. Flannan’s defence came under immense pressure. The full-back line stood firm through a remarkable spell that saw them repel five consecutive shots on goal, refusing to yield as they protected their slender lead. Their courage, composure and determination under pressure ultimately proved crucial in securing the victory.
Ali Donnelly helped steady the ship in defense and provided a solid platform from which St Flannan’s built many of their attacks. At wing-forward, Sarah Brodie, was the standout performer of the second half, winning possession time and again and scoring a super point to increase Flannan’s momentum.
The work rate of Holly Farmer was another major factor in the victory. Relentless in her efforts, she contributed important hooks and blocks while also getting her name on the scoresheet. Cait Clancy covered huge ground throughout the contest and was rewarded with some excellent long-range points, while Sadhbh Geary caused problems with her direct running and deservedly added scores of her own.
Credit must go to a tough and talented St Joseph’s Borrisoleigh team who battled throughout and pushed St Flannan’s all the way to the final whistle. However, the Clare girls’ character, determination and refusal to give up ultimately proved decisive.
Next up a double header for Junior B/Junior Dev against Loretto Fermoy on 20th October in Fermoy.
