On Friday last, we were delighted to welcome Denis McMahon to St Flannan’s, who generously bequeathed his late father Jackie’s medal collection to the college. Jackie McMahon was a student at the college in the 1930s and taught Irish for eleven years here before leaving to teach in Dublin. As a teacher, Jackie was famous for consistently producing outstanding academic results with two of his students obtaining the gold medal in Intermediate Irish. Although living in Dublin, Jackie never forgot his St Flannan’s roots. The North Munsters Schools XC took place in Lees Rd today. Well done to everyone who ran today in harsh conditions. They all qualified for the Munsters which will be held in Cork next week. Minor Girls, Minor Boys, Junior Girls and Senior Boys won team golds while the Junior Boys won a silver medal for the team. Clara, Emma and Cathal qualified in the Inter races.

The 1st Year and 2nd year girls basketball team had their first games of the season against Spanish Point yesterday. The 1st year team had a convincing win in which they were consistent on both offence and defence throughout the game. The 2nd year team followed this up with an assured performance, controlling the majority of the match as they secured a comfortable victory. Congratulations to both teams.

To mark St Blaise’s Day, Fr Tom visited the school chapel to give the traditional Blessing of Throats to teachers and students. The blessing, associated with St Blaise, is a special prayer for good health, particularly protection against illnesses of the throat, and was a meaningful moment of prayer for our school community.

Congratulations to our U16 Badminton Team ( Seán, Enda, Jack, Ferdéa and Vihan) who won the U16 Division 1 Munster Final in UL. Our U14 Badminton Team (Eoghan, Darragh, Eshann, Rónan, Jack and Cormac) won 2nd place after some very competitive games. Well done to both teams who represented our school and county in the competition.

Fr Tom joined us yesterday to celebrate Grandparents Mass as part of Catholic Schools Week. A big thank you to the grandparents, Fr Tom, the RE and Music Departments and the 1st Year students for making it such a lovely ceremony. Thanks also to Vinny and our TY crew who helped with traffic and serving teas and coffees. It was a great day and a lovely way to remember and celebrate the important role grandparents play in our lives.

Our school community is deeply saddened by the recent passing of our 5th year student, TJ. We extend our deepest sympathies to TJ’s family – his parents Suzanne and Tomás, his sisters Caoimhe and Laoise, his extended family, and his wide circle of friends.
TJ was fondly described by his teachers as a loveable rogue, a gentleman – a student who quietly got on with whatever task was put in front of him. His love of farming was clear in his choice of Agricultural Science for the Leaving Certificate.
